Considering a vasectomy? At Ackerman Urology, we know patients have many questions before making this important decision. Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about vasectomy:

What is a vasectomy and how does it work?
A vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure that cuts and seals the vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles. This prevents sperm from mixing with semen, making you sterile, but does not affect your ability to ejaculate or your sex drive.

Is a vasectomy procedure painful?
Most men experience minimal discomfort. The area is numbed with local anesthesia, and the procedure typically takes about 20–30 minutes. You’ll be awake, but pain is usually mild and short-lived.

What is vasectomy recovery like?
Expect to rest for two to three days. Mild swelling or bruising is normal and can be managed with ice packs and over-the-counter pain relievers. Most men return to work within a few days, but strenuous activity should be avoided for at least a week.

How soon is it effective?
A vasectomy is not immediately effective. Sperm may remain in your system for several weeks. Continue using other birth control until your doctor confirms sterility with a semen analysis.

Does it affect sexual function?
No. Vasectomy does not impact erections, orgasms, or testosterone levels. Many men report greater peace of mind and intimacy after the procedure.

Is a vasectomy reversible?
Vasectomy should be considered permanent. While reversals are possible, they are not always successful, so be certain of your decision before proceeding.
