March is Kidney Health Month, a reminder to protect these vital organs that filter waste, regulate blood pressure, and maintain fluid balance. At Ackerman Urology, our board-certified urologists diagnose and treat kidney conditions such as renal cysts, kidney cancer, and kidney stones. Using advanced imaging, minimally invasive procedures, and personalized care plans, we help preserve kidney function and improve quality of life.
Comprehensive Kidney Cancer Care
Kidney cancer, most often renal cell carcinoma, is often discovered on imaging scans. Early detection leads to better outcomes, and our team provides full-service management from diagnosis through recovery.
Treatment options include:
- Partial nephrectomy to preserve healthy kidney tissue
- Radical nephrectomy for larger or complex tumors
- Ablation therapies such as cryotherapy or radiofrequency for patients unable to undergo surgery
- Active surveillance for slow-growing tumors in select patients
Follow-up care includes physical exams, urinalysis, bloodwork, and imaging based on cancer stage and risk. We also coordinate with the Ackerman Cancer Center team when radiation therapies are needed.
Managing Complicated Renal Cysts
Complicated renal cysts are often found during routine imaging and must be carefully evaluated for cancer risk. Using the Bosniak classification system, we assess imaging results from ultrasound, CT, or MRI to decide the most appropriate treatment plan.
Treatment options include:
- Active surveillance with imaging for low-risk cysts (Bosniak IIF)
- Partial or radical nephrectomy if malignancy is suspected (Bosniak III or IV)
Follow-up includes kidney function tests and repeat scans every 6–12 months. This approach protects kidney health while avoiding unnecessary surgery.
Simple Kidney Cysts: Usually Harmless
Simple kidney cysts affect about half of adults over 50 and are almost always benign. We confirm the diagnosis with imaging and reassure patients when no intervention is necessary.
Treatment may involve:
- Observation for asymptomatic cysts
Follow-up is often minimal unless the cyst changes or causes discomfort.
Kidney Stone Treatment and Prevention
Kidney stones cause severe pain and may return without preventive care. We individualize treatment based on stone size, type, and location.
Treatment options include:
- Medical therapy with hydration, pain relief, and medications like tamsulosin for stones under 5 mm
- Shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) for stones 4–20 mm
- Ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy for most ureteral stones
- Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) for stones over 2 cm
Prevention starts with a 24-hour urine test to identify risk factors such as high calcium or low citrate levels. Recommendations include drinking 2.5–3 liters of water daily, lowering sodium and oxalate intake, and using medications when appropriate. Follow-up imaging confirms stone clearance within a few weeks.
